Verve Coffee Roasters’ Guatemala La Esperanza

In this week’s featured coffee, we return to our local coffee roaster - Verve Coffee Roasters in Santa Cruz, CA.  The Staff Pick was the La Esperanza, so obviously we were going to take their advice and give this Guatemalan a try in our newly designed Cold Bruer.

COFFEE SPECS

  • Producer:  Aurelio Villatoro
  • Country: Guatemala
  • Region:  La Libertad, Huehuetenango
  • Cultivar:  Bourbon
  • Process:  Wet-Process
  • Elevation: 1700-1850 meters
  • Harvest:  November-April
  • Tasting Notes:  Cherry, Cola, Honeyed

HOW WE BREWED IT

  • 60g medium grind
  • 700ml ice/water mix
  • 1 drip/second initial drip rate
  • 5-6 hour brew

Verve’s tasting notes call for “cherry, cola, honeyed.”  We definitely picked up on the cola flavors right away, while the dark cherry and honeyed-sweetness lingered in the background.  We also noted dark chocolate and raspberries, which was particularly pleasant in the finish.  Overall, this coffee has a dark, rich, complexity with floral undertones that makes for an excellent cold brew.  But don’t just take our word for it, listen to the Staff Picks - they know what’s up!  You can find this La Esperanza here for $18 with free shipping.   And if you’re in the West Hollywood area, be sure to check out Verve’s new location opening today September 1st!   The store's design looks awesome.  Check it out here on Instagram.
